5 Things You Should Know About Uncertainty

Ever found yourself asking, "What if they don’t like me?" or "What if I can’t complete my project?" Maybe even worrying, "What if this freckle on my arm is something serious?"

These "what if" questions used to control my life, my goals, and my chances for new opportunities. I thought there must be answers to these questions, because if there weren't, how could I just deal with not knowing?

Then, one day, 8 years ago, my therapist introduced me to the concept of embracing uncertainty. Life, she explained, is full of unknowns, and to truly live, we have to accept that we won't always have answers.

Of course, it’s not that easy. With OCD, shifting focus from those nagging questions takes practice and strength. It's about focusing on the present moment and using your energy to be your best self now.

When you're not living according to the "what if," you start to live life according to the now. If we don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, doesn’t it make sense to start living your life to the fullest today?

Here are 5 things you should know about uncertainty:

  1. It's a Natural Part of Life

Uncertainty is just a part of being human. Whether it's about a new job, making decisions in relationships, or dealing with health issues, nobody can predict the future perfectly. Accepting that some things are out of our control can actually help reduce anxiety and make us more resilient.

  2. It Triggers Anxiety

For a lot of people, uncertainty can be a major anxiety trigger. The fear of not knowing what’s going to happen next can lead to constant worrying and stress. That’s why it’s so important to develop ways to cope with these feelings.

  3. It Impacts Decision-Making

When we don’t know what the outcome will be, making decisions can feel impossible. This uncertainty can lead to procrastination or avoidance, which can stop us from moving forward in life. Finding ways to navigate through this can help us make better choices and progress.

  4. It Cultivates Growth

Believe it or not, embracing uncertainty can be a huge opportunity for personal growth. Stepping into the unknown can bring new experiences and opportunities that we wouldn’t encounter otherwise. This can build resilience and adaptability over time.

  5. Mindfulness Can Help

Staying present through mindfulness can really take the edge off the anxiety that comes with uncertainty. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and cognitive restructuring help keep us grounded and better manage our reactions to uncertain situations.

By understanding these aspects of uncertainty, we can better navigate the unpredictable nature of life. It’s all about finding ways to stay calm, make decisions, and grow, even when we don’t have all the answers.
